Google WiFi Mesh: the 2022 Full Review

The good news is that the previous generation of Google WiFi gear can be used as extensions with Nest WiFi to extend the network's reach but without the audio abilities. At a distance of 30 feet, the Nest Wifi router garnered 291Mbps, outperforming the Google Wifi, the Nokia Beacon 1, and the Deco M9 Plus routers and coming in right behind the Netgear XRM570 router. It uses a 40mm speaker driver to deliver 360-degree audio and has four far-field microphones embedded in the top of the enclosure.

It already hooks into some of the largest platforms now by including Nest, Philips and Samsung’s SmartThings, and given a few months that number will grow even more. Google Home can do some of that already, making it far and away a better system now than the Echo was when it first launched. But, speaking from experience, it’s only going to get better, smarter and more robust in the coming weeks, months and years. And while it’s easy to hammer this point home and point out all Google Home’s shortcomings in one long-winded tirade, we’re not going to.

Google's Nest WiFi combines a great mesh system with a slick smart speaker to be the mesh Wi-Fi kit to beat

Google promises that three Wi-Fi Points can cover up to 4,500 square feet in a location. Each Google Wifi unit has an Infineon Trusted Platform Module built in, which can thwart hackers by creating an encrypted link with Google's servers for downloads and verifying the installed firmware upon reboot. Google Wifi automatically updates its firmware as needed, something that many mesh routers, and more regular routers are beginning to do.

Finally, Google is offering a three-pack in the US and Australia $349/AU$549 , which will cover up to 5,400 square feet and offer all of the same Google Assistant features available only via the Point devices. It isn't a top performer or a value pick, but the Amplifi Alien is a great-looking Wi-Fi 6 mesh router that lets you create a VPN-style connection to your home network when you're traveling, which is a nice, unique feature. You can see those results for yourself in the bar graph above, which shows the overall average Wi-Fi 6 upload and download speeds for each system we've tested. We're still working to re-test the top-rated systems from previous years alongside new systems as they come out, so you can expect regular updates to this post whenever I've got new data to share. Expect regular updates to this post as new Wi-Fi mesh routers like those make it to market. For now, here are our picks for the top-tested systems you should be considering first if you're buying now.

Works with Thread border routers.

Unlike the range extenders, the Nest Wifi Router only comes in white, and it only includes a single spare Ethernet jack. Although you’ll frequently need to sign into these third-party products, once you’re in the functionality works well. We tested the Google Home with a Nest setup and found that its commands were easy and intuitive to give. By connecting different nodes, we get a stable and high quality connection throughout our home. We no longer have to worry about switching networks depending on the room we are in.

It’s even more popular than Eero, which first popularized the idea of a mesh router for better Wi-Fi coverage in a home. 3 Many Google devices will be automatically updated to support Matter. A traditional router the Nest Wifi is not, so you literally are not able to dig into its inner workings like you can older routers. If you need access to functions like port forwarding or some such, you better go for a more traditional model from the likes of Linksys or Netgear.

Two 1000 Mbps ports can be combined into one on this modem, for a maximum throughput of 2000 Mbps. A simple method to effectively increase your transfer rate by a factor of two. Sign up for Verge Deals to get deals on products we've tested sent to your inbox daily.

That shows us how fast each router can transfer data without any of the extra variables that you get when you're pulling data from the cloud. And, by running our speed tests at multiple distances, we get a look at each router's range, too. If you’re in the UK, the Google Wifi is available in both a 2-pack and a 3-pack, which will cost you £229 and £329, respectively. The first step is to download the Google Wifi app to your phone or tablet, which takes you through everything step by step. There’s no DSL modem built in here; instead, you attach Google Wifi to an existing router or modem using the supplied Ethernet cable.

Google Wifi supports static IP addressing, and you can also reserve IP addresses for key LAN accessories. It also lacks controls that are standard on high-performance traditional routers, such as the ability to adjust the transmission strength and change the channel width. While Google Wifi doesn't currently work with IP version 6 addressing, Google is working on an update to add that function. The Wifi perked up when its units were placed in complicated configurations scattered among multiple rooms on two floors.

More recently, Google Home speakers have undergone a name change; nowadays, new Google speakers fall under the Google Nest mantle, including the Google Nest Hub Max and the Google Nest Mini. Google Wi-Fi can bring high performance in every room of our, albeit small, house. While it still available and being sold by some online retailers, you'll find the current generation to be a better value as they are both sitting at the same price point.

Does mesh Wi-Fi replace your router?

If that’s not enough for you, two mesh points will give you about 4,400 square feet, and three will cover 6,600 square feet. What is great about these wifi points is that you can set them up exactly where you need Wi-Fi coverage the most, so you may be able to get the job done with just one if properly placed. If you aren’t a big fan of Google, you may want to check out other selections like the Linksys MR9600 and the HooToo TripMate Titan. While you can connect the Google Wifi to an existing router and share the internet that way, certain advanced features, such as port-forwarding, won't work. The difference with the Wifi is that instead of just a single unit, you can have up to three. If you get a single unit, you have just one point, which can cover about 1,200 square feet, which is suitable for a small home or average-sized apartment.

While this modem is capable of supporting connections of up to 2000 Mbps, the vast majority of residences do not have access to speeds that high. We test lots of routers at CNET HQ -- mesh and otherwise -- so we're constantly updating our rundowns of the top systems on the market. I'll note any new mesh systems we test here as we go, along with a quick summary of my takeaways. Please note that this list includes several systems that were tested at my home during the pandemic, and not in our latest test setup. This graph shows you the average download speeds to a Wi-Fi 6E test device in each room of our test environment. Not surprisingly, the two standouts here are our top two Wi-Fi 6E systems, the Netgear Orbi AXE11000 and the Eero Pro 6E.

Google Wifi review: Customization and smart home

With a mesh router, I can still hit triple-digit speeds in those back rooms, which are about as fast as when I'm connecting closer to the router. Things got even more impressive when we took the Orbi AX6000 home to test its performance in a real-world setting. That's one of the fastest numbers we've ever seen from a Wi-Fi 6 mesh router in that test, and it only fell to 666Mbps at a distance of 75 feet -- which is still faster than we saw from the Nest Wifi up close, just 5 feet away. As mentioned, the Nest Wifi doesn’t have a dedicated wireless backhaul band, instead relying on a traditional 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band system for both connections between the router and points as well as connections to devices.
